Hardscape is the architectural layer of the garden — the floor, the wall, the threshold, the seat. Done right, it disappears into the experience and lasts decades. Done wrong, it cracks, settles, and embarrasses the project by year three. The work we do at GREENPLACE is engineering-first: drainage, base, grade, and joint discipline before pattern and color.

• Stonework — natural stone, large-format porcelain, travertine, and dimensional limestone for patios, pool surrounds, and entry sequences
• Pavers — interlocking concrete, clay brick, and permeable systems with engineered base and polymeric-sand joints
• Architectural concrete — board-formed, sandblasted, integral-color, and saw-cut joint layouts treated as a design surface, not a default
• Walls — retaining (engineered, with proper drainage), garden walls (stacked stone, plaster, board-form concrete), and seat-height site walls
• Outdoor structures — pergolas, ramadas, outdoor kitchens, fire features, custom steel and timber detailing
• Drainage and grading — French drains, channel drains, swales, subsurface piping, slope correction, and runoff management before any finished surface goes down

Most hardscape failures we see on Southern California properties — sunken pavers, cracked concrete, retaining walls leaning out, water pooling against the house — come from skipped or undersized base work, not bad finish material. Our build approach treats what's invisible as the project that has to be right.

• Excavation depth tuned to soil type and load — not a default 4 inches everywhere
• Geotextile fabric between subgrade and base to prevent fines migration over time
• Class II road base, compacted in lifts with a plate compactor and verified before bedding sand
• Drainage layer designed before pattern — perimeter channels and weeps for walls, slope on patios to direct water away from the house
• Edge restraints on every paver field, anchored into the base — not pinned to the soil

We specify materials chosen for the specific site, climate, and use — not catalog defaults. Pool surrounds need slip-rated finish and consistent thermal mass. Driveways need load capacity matched to the actual vehicles. Walls in fire-prone zones need non-combustible details. We walk you through the trade-offs in plain language before any commitment.

Once design direction is set (either through our own design phase or a partner architect/designer), the build cadence is: protect what stays, expose grade, install drainage and base, dry-lay and verify, set finish material, cure or cap, and walk the project with you before close-out. We send a weekly site update and keep one point of contact across the project.
