Service
Terraces, paths, retaining walls, steps, and outdoor structures built with precise detailing and material discipline. Every surface is engineered for drainage, stability, and longevity.
What we do inside Hardscape & Build
Hardscape is the architectural layer of the garden — the floor, the wall, the threshold, the seat. Done right, it disappears into the experience and lasts decades. Below is what we resolve in the field.

Interlocking concrete, natural stone, large-format porcelain, travertine — with engineered base, polymeric-sand joints, and edge restraint.

Board-formed, sandblasted, integral-color, and saw-cut joint patterns treated as a design surface — not a default sidewalk.

Engineered retaining (with drainage behind, not just in front), garden walls in stacked stone / plaster / board-form, and seat-height site walls.

Pergolas, ramadas, outdoor kitchens, fire features, custom steel + timber detailing — for the property to live as an extension of the home.

Slope correction, French drains, channel drains, swales, subsurface piping. Engineered before any finished surface goes down.

Slip-rated pool surrounds, thermal-mass coordination, drainage integration with the pool shell, and clean transitions to planting and lawn.

Phased site protection, demolition, base prep, hardscape, planting, lighting — sequenced to keep the site clean and the schedule honest.

Material selection tuned to load, climate, and use. Engineered for 25+ years, not just opening day.
Service perspective
Terraces, paths, retaining walls, steps, and outdoor structures, executed with engineering discipline and craft. Every surface is designed for proportion and built for drainage, stability, and longevity.

What this service must resolve
Will it last?
Built on engineering: drainage, base prep, and structural details.
Will you manage complexity?
A clear process, calm cadence, and one point of contact.
Will it feel like us?
Direction, customization, and collaboration, not catalog design.

Chapter 1
Surfaces, structures, and the systems underneath
Hardscape is the architectural layer of the garden — the floor, the wall, the threshold, the seat. Done right, it disappears into the experience and lasts decades. Done wrong, it cracks, settles, and embarrasses the project by year three. The work we do at GREENPLACE is engineering-first: drainage, base, grade, and joint discipline before pattern and color.
Chapter 2
Why base prep matters more than the surface
Most hardscape failures we see on Southern California properties — sunken pavers, cracked concrete, retaining walls leaning out, water pooling against the house — come from skipped or undersized base work, not bad finish material. Our build approach treats what's invisible as the project that has to be right.
Chapter 3
Material selection and the long view
We specify materials chosen for the specific site, climate, and use — not catalog defaults. Pool surrounds need slip-rated finish and consistent thermal mass. Driveways need load capacity matched to the actual vehicles. Walls in fire-prone zones need non-combustible details. We walk you through the trade-offs in plain language before any commitment.
Chapter 4
How a hardscape project moves
Once design direction is set (either through our own design phase or a partner architect/designer), the build cadence is: protect what stays, expose grade, install drainage and base, dry-lay and verify, set finish material, cure or cap, and walk the project with you before close-out. We send a weekly site update and keep one point of contact across the project.

Most projects work best when landscape, hardscape, lighting, and stewardship are resolved together.

Architectural lighting, water, smart irrigation, sound, sensors, and robotic mowing — the invisible systems that make the garden work.

Custom focal pieces, sculptural details, and curated finishes that give the garden its signature.

Planting, circulation, grading, and material direction resolved into a garden plan that feels architectural from the first sketch.
